Ironman 70.3 SA – Cape Classic

NEWS:

New Triathlon Season:
Entries for the Clanwilliam Triathlon are sold out, Ironman 70.3 East London is almost sold out, Embark training groups for both these events have started and we are already receiving applications for 2015-16 TSA Licenses.  So it is here, the new Tri season!  We have not received the new TSA license rates yet and will communicate this as soon as we hear.  You are welcome to purchase your license on-line at Tri SPaza in the meantime.  Just note that we may have to adjust the rates once these are published.

Race Etiquette
WP Athletics has released a guide to race etiquette to follow when doing a road running race.  This is good advice, which can be applied at any event.  Please download the guide, attached at the bottom of this newsletter.

Member Personal News:
Congratulations to Stephanie Smit and Daniel Appel who got engaged on the weekend.  Steph and Dan met while training for Ironman with Embark last year.

Tyron Ingle, one of our top performing athletes, had another great result on Friday when he got a “Yes” from his girlfriend, now fiancée, Tamsyn Basson.  Congratulations Tyron and Tamsyn!

RESULTS:

Ironman 70.3 SA – It’s all about the Bike!
We did a brief analysis of results from the Durban and East London (Buffalo City) events and came up with some stats that may be of interest.  It was no surprise that the bike leg in Durban would be much faster but we didn’t expect more than half of the finishers to get Sub-3 Bike splits.

Note that these statistics are based on results that we could extract from the event website and are not to be considered official statistics.  Since we don’t have the actual numbers of starters (the number of entrants include athletes who have withdrawn prior to the event) we cannot determine the actual number of DNFs.  However, based on information we have of ATC and Embark entrants, who made up 10% of the field in East London and 6 % in Durban, we can safely assume that the majority of DNFs were in fact non-starters or pre-race withdrawals.  Whilst scores of triathletes supported on the sides because they did not get entries due to the event being sold out.

Which brings us to another interesting theory:  If substitutions were allowed and a couple of R100s for each substitution found its way into Ironman 4 the Kidz coffers, the R150 000 collected for this charity at the Durban event could easily be doubled.  But that is a discussion for another day.

TRAINING THIS WEEK:  Details here...

SWIM:  The canal swim will take place on Saturday afternoon at 16:00.  From this week onwards, we will start the swim from the Jetty near the West Quay Office Block, up from the Cape Grace Hotel.  This is where the winter solstice swim starts.  We can no longer park in the area opposite the Caltex so please park elsewhere in the waterfront and walk to the start.  Please try and arrive in your wetsuit as we don’t have space to store tog bags, etc. in this area.

A reminder to subscribe to the Canal Swim mailing list to receive last minute notifications and instructions for the swim.

BIKE:  On Thursday mornings we will do a Mountain Bike ride from the Point Virgin Active at 06:00.  On Saturday morning we will do a 2 - 3 hour ride, starting from the Point Virgin Active at 07:30.  The Tuesday morning rides will resume a bit later in the year.

RUN:  Tuesday Track at the Green Point Cricket Club (GPCC) is back to normal with sessions in the morning at 06:00 and in the afternoon / evening at 18:00.  We have not done our time trial yet this month but it will take place later in August (not this coming Tuesday).
This evening (Thursday), we will do a trail run starting from GPCC at 18:00.
