The Moses Mabhida Stadium makes for a truly stunning finish to the Comrades Ultra Marathon!  Not without logistical challenges though, as runners must scale another massive flight of stairs, 3 levels, to exit or visit the club areas.  But arriving in the stadium, after 90 Kms on your feet, with crowds cheering must be amazing. 

Our first finisher was Nic De Beer (Silver, 06:53), who runs for KPMG and is frequently seen tearing up lane 8 at track on a Tuesday morning.  Congratulations to the following members on their Bill Rowan medals:  Colin Timmis (7:58, DURBAC), Gary Laue (8:13, WCoast),

Pieter Calitz (8:17, Chappies); Victoria Reuvers (8:32, Wildrunner); Marié Wessels (8:34); Daniel Sass (8:39); Robert Timmis (8:44); Erica Terblanche (8:48); Gregory Torr (8:51) and Mari Bester (8:52).

Esther Patience finished her 7th Comrades in (10:57) and earned a bronze medal (sub-11) for the first time.

Sean Featonby finished his second attempt in 11:25 and said: “Absolute relief, monkey off my back and rockstar wife with beer waiting!”

Our last finisher was Kelvin Trautman (11:58:35), often seen tearing up lane 4 at track on a Wednesday afternoon.  Kelvin ran at the tail end of the race, often in the opposite direction, carrying camera equipment, to complete a personal project, called The BackMarkers Project.  He is documenting the slowest ultra marathon runners from around the world.  Runners World published a lengthy feature on it this month and his story will be soon be published in a couple magazines overseas.  You can view some of his work on kelvintrautman.com.
