Urgent news about Duathlon Champs – Canal Swim Rules

Selection for Duathlon Nationals & Worlds

The 2017 SA Duathlon and LD Duathlon Championships will be hosted by KZN Triathlon on the 2nd of July 2017 at the Midmar Resort.  You can download all the event details from the online version of this newsletter on our News Blog.

Due to the earlier dates and entry closure date for Duathlon World Championships, the 2017 SA Champs will be too late to use for selection for 2017 World Champs.  Triathlon SA has requested that national team selectors use results from the events below to select the team for 2017 Duathlon Worlds:

1.            The 2016 Provincial / Regional Duathlon Championship results (Durbanville, April 2016).
2.            The 2017 SA National Triathlon Championships (Alldam, March 2017).
3.            The 2016 Duathlon World Championships (Spain, June 2016).

In addition, Duathletes can apply for a slot in the Provincial and / or National teams through credible results obtained during the past 24 months.  As the Province must submit the list to the TSA Office by 28 April 2017, we need to receive applications from athletes by 17:00 on 25 April 2017.

Western Cape Duathletes wishing to participate at 2017 Nationals or Worlds must therefore apply for selection at the link below:

The 2017 SA Duathlon Championships will also be the selection event for the 2018 World Duathlon Championships, taking place in Denmark, early July 2018.

The 2017 SA LD Duathlon Championships will be the selection event for the 2017 LD Duathlon World Championships, taking place in Zofingen, Switzerland, in September 2017.

TRAINING:  Details here...

SWIM:  The canal swim will be on Saturday afternoon at 14:00.  The canal has now been completely re-opened and the water taxis will be in operation on Saturday afternoons.  Please ensure that you collect the new instructions for the swim from the sign-in table before starting your swim.  There will also only be a 5 minute window to enter the water once the first swimmers start.  You must therefore be ready to swim at 14:00.  These rules are important to ensure swimmers’ safety and members who do not adhere to instructions will be banned from the swim.

Swimmers who arrive late will not be permitted to enter the water.

BIKE:  There are no rides scheduled for this weekend.

RUN:  Track will continue as per normal on Tuesday mornings at 06:00 and Wednesday evenings at 18:00.  We have purchased special, low power, flood lights, which will be set up at the track sessions.  However, please always come prepared with your own headlamp as we cannot set up the lights in the rain or heavy winds.

Robben Island Swim
Arafat Gatabazi is planning a swim from Robben Island to Three Anchor Bay to raise funds for Breadline Africa, a non-profit organisation who converts shipping containers into classrooms and libraries for kids in underprivileged communities.  Arafat is seeking swimmers to join in this quest to raise more funds for this cause.  Swimmers can swim with or without wetsuits and solo or in relays.  The swim will take place during May, depending on favourable weather conditions.  Please let us know if you are interested.

Have a great weekend!
