 What a Year! – 800 Active Members – Jailbreak Results

 

2014 was ATC’s eighth year in existence and must certainly be the most memorable with events such as, the 10th Anniversary Edition of IRONMAN South Africa, the first ITU World Triathlon Series on African soil and THAT 4-man Triathlon Relay at the Commonwealth Games!  We certainly finished the year on a high note with a great Awards Dinner and last week’s pub run, which turned out to be loads of fun.  There are plenty pictures of the above events on the ATC Facebook page so if we have not tagged you yet, please have a look and tag yourself.

 

When ATC was launched in 2006, founder-Chairman STeve Attwell set a target of 80 Members in the first year.  That target was reached just before our first anniversary in July 2007.

 

This year we surpassed the 800 mark and currently have 807 active members on our books!  This includes 323 new members signed up between August 2013 and July 2014.  Since August this year, 132 new members have signed up.  We thank all our members for this fantastic support!

 

A large number of memberships will be renewable at the end of December and we will start sending out reminders soon, as we drive towards 1000 active members before our 10^th Anniversary.  Members can join or renew at the current rates until 31 January after which date membership fees will increase.

 

The ATC Office will be open at the Oceana Power Boat Club (OPBC) from 17:00 on Wednesday.  We have received stock of running vests, caps, triathlon gear and 2015 ASA licenses. All this will be available from the office.  Please come down and collect your 2015 ASA license ahead of the Sundowner and Bay to Bay events.

 

The first Jailbreak event was also held in 2006 and it took 9 years for the weather gods to come aboard and deliver near-perfect conditions.  ATC’ers were quick to capitalise on this as well as the new (arguably) faster run route to deliver record-breaking results.  Results are still provisional but we will claim the following for now:

 

Overall winner was Jean Van Wyk with Dean Hopf in second and Rohan Kennedy in third.  Both Dean and Jean won their age categories and improved on the record.  Jonty Low (3^rd SM) was 4^th overall.  Marco Stichini (5^th SM), Nick Turner (7^th SM) and JD Neill (2^nd OM) all finished in the top 10 of the MAXimum Escape.  In the Veteran’s category Douglas Burger was 2^nd and Thinus Meyer 3^rd.

Under the ladies Nienke Van Schaik was second overall (2^nd SF) and Stephanie Smit third (1^st OF).   Stephanie Crossland was the 2^nd Veteran Lady.

 

In the MINimum Escape Simon Starck was the first ATC’er home in fifth place followed by Andrew Le Roux in sixth. Henry Wolstenholme was ninth (2^nd VM) and Jonathan Hartzenberg eleventh (2^nd SM).  Derek Oehley was the third Master Male.  Lara Fury won the Veteran Ladies Category and Candice Morrison was the 3^rd Senior Lady.  Andre Pepler was the 3^rd Master.

This will be our last update for 2014.  To plan club training sessions around all the holidays coming up, we have drawn up a table with Events and Training sessions happening over the festive season.  Please consult the table further down.  These sessions are also published on our website under Training.

 

Join Discovery for early morning runs during the festive season from their new concept store in the upmarket The Point building at 76 Regent Road in Sea Point.  The runs will be led by Embark's running coach, Garth Dorman, along the Atlantic Seaboard for about an hour, followed by a free coffee.  The runs will take place on Wednesday, Friday and next Monday at 06:00.

 

We will continue with the session at The Glen Country Club on Tuesday mornings.  However, the evening sessions will be moved to the Mouille Point Light House due to traffic congestion in the Camps Bay / Clifton areas.  This Tuesday (tomorrow the 16th) there will only be a session in the morning at 07:00.

 

We will swim in the Canal this Friday but next week (the 26th) we will swim in the Silvermine Dam after the Tokai Manor House run.  The swim will start at approximately 09:30.

 

This Thursday we will do a Mountain Bike ride from the Wembley Virgin Active at 05:30.  Tomorrow we will not do a ride but from next Tuesday we will do road bike rides from the Point Virgin Active.

Our ling rides on the weekends will be on Saturday mornings from the Point Virgin Active at 06:00.

 

 

On Tuesday is the Reconciliation Day swim from Clifton 3^rd Beach at 10:00.  The swim around Barker Rock is 3.2 Kilometres but there is also a 1.6 Km option. 

There is also the Gugulethu 10 Km Run.

 

The Sundowner nite run is on Thursday at the V&A Waterfront.  Join us at Ferrymans for a drink after the run.

 

On-line Entries for the Tokai Manor House Run, taking place on 26 December, have been extended to this Friday.  You can also enter in person before the Sundowner on Thursday.  If you entered on-line you can collect your race number from Sportsmans Warehouse Rondebosch on Saturday between 10am and 5pm.

 

The last event of the year is the Runners Memorial 8 Km Run, taking place on 31 December from the Mouille Point Light House.

 

On-line Entries for the Bay to Bay 30 Km and 15 Km runs close on the 30^th of December.  Entries will also be taken at race card collection on Saturday 3 January, between 10h00 – 17h00 at Sportsmans Warehouse Rondebosch, Sea Point and Tygervalley.  No entries or race card collection on race day.
