NEWS:
Summer Sunset Team Time Trial
The ATC Summer Sunset Team Time Trial will take place on Wednesday 24 February 2016 This fun relay, consisting of 4 x 3 Km laps through the Green Point Urban Park, will be hosted at the Green Point Cricket Club (GPCC).
ATC Members, we need your assistance with the event! If you would like to help before, during or after the event, please let us know through the following link: Click Here to Volunteer
There will be a cash bar and refreshments for sale in the GPCC Club House and all finishers will receive a special hand-made medal.
For now, all you need is your team name and the category you would like to compete in. Then visit the
ATC SSTTT Event Page to Enter!
Runner details will be provided on Finishers Cards, which you will collect at Registration, before the event. Please encourage your runners to follow through to the finish line after handing over to the next runner. If runners disappear back into the holding chutes, it becomes impossible for us to work out individual lap times. This leads to big delays with publishing the results after the event.
Entries are limited to 100 teams (400 Runners). ATC will support the #Runclean campaign at this event. Since our route is only 3 Kms long, we only have a refreshment station inside the GPCC Grounds. Absolutely no littering will be tolerated in the park or along the route.
Embark Beginners Triathlon Training
The Embark beginner’s triathlon course, aimed at the Discovery WTS Cape Town triathlon and duathlon, is well under way. Our current intake of beginners are gaining experience and confidence every week! It’s never too late to join, so if you are inspiring someone, get them involved in the fun and social coached group training. There is the option for the Duathlon too, so take out the intimidating factor of the swim, and let them get into Triathlon through Duathlon.
Alternate group training courses currently running are the ever popular Two Oceans Half Marathon training with Garth, the Ironman 70.3 Durban and Ironman PE training with our certified IRONMAN coaches (Seaboard and Northern Suburbs), the AfricanX with Meg, and the Two Oceans Ultra with Bev. Local is always lekker, but if you like getting out and about then check out the Tour of Croatia, Ironman 70.3 Pula, happening in September too! All the details can be found on

WP Triathlon News
WPTA AGM and Committee
A Special General Meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, 16 March 2016. Leading up to this SGM, the current WPTA Committee will work with interested parties and potential future committee members to amend the WPTA constitution, primarily for the following reasons:
1) To prepare for the structural change from Western Province to the Western Cape with a Unicity substructure.
2) To allow the Provincial Body to interact with authorised delegates from registered clubs, who will in turn liaise with registered members. This will enable the Province to function on mandates from the clubs, rather than individual members.
Registered members will be notified of the changes to the constitution before the SGM and will be given an opportunity to raise concerns and vote on any proposed changes.
We urge registered triathletes to please attend the SGM on the 16th of March so we can attend to formalities and start an exciting new era of Triathlon in the Western Cape!
Champs Selection and Championships
Due to Duathlon Worlds being brought forward this year and problems with finding a suitable venue for WP Triathlon Championships ahead of SA Championships, licensed members wanting to qualify for the Provincial Triathlon and / or National Duathlon teams were given an opportunity to apply for team slots by submitting results of qualifying events. WPTA is currently evaluating applications and athletes will be notified by 17 February.
This selection process does NOT mean that WP Duathlon and Triathlon Champs will not take place this year. Duathlon Champs is scheduled for the 17th of April at Uniwines in Rawsonville. This will be a selection event for SA Duathlon Championships, taking place
WPTA are working on possible dates and venues for WP Triathlon Championships in late March / early April. This race will obviously not be used as selection event but this is where the WP Champs will be crowned.
Training Algorithms Study
To further develop and validate their algorithms, LifeQ is currently conducting VO2max and blood lactate tests, specifically on athletes with higher VO2 Max levels. Participants will be given a full report on their VO2 test results, heart rate (HR) zones and a body composition, at no cost to the participant. Athletes’ VO2Max levels will be estimated and those athletes who meet the minimum required levels will proceed to the second phase, which will involve more intensive testing at the SSISA in Newlands or the University of Stellenbosch.
RESULTS:
Red Hill Marathon
Congratulations to all the ATC’ers who did the Red Hill Marathon and Classic and qualified to run an Ultra Marathon! ATC’ers results for the Marathon and Classic appear at the end of this email. Congratulations to Thalia Charalambous, who came second in the 36 Km Classic event. Thalia reported that she has seen a marked improvement in her speed since she started participating in the ATC Track sessions.

Kloof Nek Classic
Kate Mapham won the Kloof Nek Classic Half Marathon last Sunday and Vivienne Williams won the Female 50-59 Category. Viv could not stay for prize giving and according to race organisers and an “older gentleman” from ATC collected her prize money. Please let us know if you were at prize giving and know who collected Viv’s prize.
Sanlam Cape Mile
Thanks very much to the ATC open water swimmers who ensured that ATC, once again, won the prize for the club with the most entrants! And thank you very much to Sanlam for the R6000 prize money. We are already plotting something cool to do with the money.
Congratulations to the following members for their top finishes in the Mile: Caylan Bromley, 3rd (14-30) and 5th Elite; Amy Barnes, 2nd (14-30); Vivienne Williams, 2nd (51+). All the ATC’ers results are at the end of this email. You will find some names appear more than once, 5 times actually. These are the girls who swam all 5 heats, just because they can!
SWIM: The Canal Swim will be on Friday morning at 06:00.
BIKE: We will ride on Thursday morning at 05:30 from the Point Virgin Active
Ironman SA Training Ride - Saturday
On Saturday there will be a supported long ride, starting from the Camps Bay police station at 06:00. We will team up with Embark for this ride and the ATC / Embark Ranger will follow the group to offer assistance with mechanicals and to transport extra nutrition. We will ask for a contribution of R50 per ride to pay the driver and fuel. Anyone is welcome, not just athletes training for Ironman.
RUN: Our track sessions will take place on Tuesday mornings at 06:00 and Wednesday evenings at 18:00. The ATC office will also be open before and after the sessions. On Wednesday afternoon some of our development runners will join us for the session.
We would like to thank the
Laser Beautique Gardens for sponsoring prizes for our February 5 Km Club Time Trial. Members who posted the fastest times and a couple of lucky runners won prizes ranging from Swedish Massages to Near Infra Red (NIR) Treatments to Laser Hair Removal. NIR is a relatively new therapeutic treatment that can reduce inflammation, decrease muscle spasms and increase blood circulation, treat joint pain and stiffness, sprains and strains, muscular and back pain, muscle spasms and a host of other ailments. For more information and to book for any of the both, please contact:
gardens@thelaserbeautique.co.za
For the March 5 Km TT, we have another lucky draw planned. Watch this space for details!
Good luck to all the cyclists taking part in the SA National Road, Time Trial and Para-cycling Championships, happening this weekend in KwaZulu-Natal!
On Friday there will be another Biathle, to be held at the Rustenburg Girls High School in Rondebosch.
The Tankwa Trek Mountain Bike Stage Race starts on Friday at the Kaleo Guest Farm in Ceres for three days of riding through the Tankwa Karoo. The Two Day Lighthouse to Lighthouse Mountain Bike Stage race starts on Saturday in Gansbaai. There is also a shorter Mountain Bike Tour in Stanford with 45 Km routes on Saturday and Sunday.
The Olympic Cycles Journey for Sight Fun Ride takes place in Fish Hoek on Sunday. The Tour De Stellenbosch, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed.
The Spur Silvermine XL mountain trail run and relay takes place on Sunday in the Silvermine Nature Reserve. Other trail runs on Saturday include the Camphill Sports Challenge in Hermanus and the Run the Vines Trail Run on Mitre’s Edge Wine Farm. The Dirtopia Love Run takes place on the Warwick Wine Estate on Sunday.
On Saturday there is the Drakenstein Correctional Services 27 Km run in Franschoek. On Sunday, the Glenryck Tygerberg 30 starts at the Parow Athletics Track and will take runners over some nasty hills in Durbanville to offer excellent Two Oceans Training.
FUTURE EVENTS:
Bike Transport – Ironman SA
ATC will be sending the trailer and gazebos down to Port Elizabeth to set up a (loud) supporters’ station to cheer on our athletes doing the Standard Bank Ironman Africa Championships in April. To cover costs we will transport a few participants’ bikes and gear, at a fee of R600 each. We can only take 8 bikes and slots will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please reply to this email if you would like to book.
Accommodation around the expo and transition areas is pretty full already. The Town Lodge still has some rooms available but you are advised to book quickly.
If you don’t get a spot on the ATC Trailer, you can get hold of
Focus on the Finish Line, who will transport your bike, as is, without the need to pack and re-assemble the bikes. They also offer transport for your spare wheels and other gear. Please contact
info@focusonthefinishline.com for details.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
