 Big 5 Results – Cape Winter Trail Series
 

NEWS:

Big 5 Club Champs:
We are the inaugural Knysna Big 5 Sports Challenge Club Champs!  Thanks to all the members who competed in the Club Challenge for ATC.  We have not received the final results but we can tell you that Dean Hopf finished 3rd overall whilst JD Neill, Vernon Visser and Travys Wilkins all hovered in top 10 positions throughout the week.  Brenton Ashby, Luke Walker, STeve Attwell, Gert Wilkins and Ilana Steenkamp all completed the 80 Km Mountain Bike, 1.8 Km Swim, 15 Km Trail Run, XTERRA Knysna and Forest Half Marathon to collect valuable points for ATC.
In the Big 5 Lite Challenge, Xanri Haak was the 3rd lady overall.  Paul Ingen, Peter Adolphs, Delene Bosman and Robyn Elford all completed the 50 Km Mountain Bike, 50 Road Bike or 1.8 Km Swim, 11 Km Trail Run, XTERRA Lite and Forest Half Marathon.
 
ATC’ers were also lucky throughout the week with Ben Campbell winning a Suunto watch (R5K), JD Neill an Oakley voucher (R3.5K), Gert Wilkins a Swedish Massage (R 1.2K), STeve Attwell a Windhoek Light fold-up chair / cooler box (R150) and Andrew Le Roux a Windhoek Light Apron (R50).  Delene Bosman is the rock-paper-scissors champ and rode away with the grand prize at the Big 5 ceremony after winning a beautiful orange full suspension Trek 29er, worth R35K!
 
WPA Kids Holiday Club:
Western Province Athletics hosted a holiday club for the youngsters in the WPA Kids Athletics Program at the Green Point Athletics Stadium last week.  WP Athletics would like to thank the 16 participating clubs, 40 foundation coaches, partners (City of Cape Town, Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, Rotary Club of Claremont and Vital) for making the week a huge success.  The week-long program of athletics and related activities concluded on the weekend and brought some joy and learnings to the lives of 260 kids.
 

RESULTS:

Congratulations to Thalia Charalambous, who was the 5th lady in the Knysna Forest Marathon on Saturday, in a time of 3 hours 25 minutes.
 
Caitlin Van Den Berg was the first Veteran lady (4th overall) at the Restonica Le Tavignano Trail run in France.  This race is run over the gigantic Corsican Mountain, which is 1800 metres high.
 
At XTERRA Knysna, Raoul De Jongh won the 35-39 Category and was 5th overall.  Dean Hopf was 3rd in the 25-29 Category.  Brenton Ashby won the 45-49 Category with Kevin Hurwitz in 3rd.  In the XTERRA LITE, Peter Adolphs won the 30-34 Category and Paul Ingpen the 45-49 category.  Xanri Haak was 3rd in 25-29, Delene Bosman 2nd in 40-45 and Dawn Clarke 2nd in the 50+ category.

SWIM:  The Canal Swim will be on Saturday afternoon at 16:00. 
 
BIKE:  On Tuesday morning we will do a road bike ride from the Point Virgin Active at 06:00.  On Thursday morning we will do a Mountain Bike ride from the Point Virgin Active at 06:00.
This Saturday morning we will do a 2 - 3 hour ride, starting from the Point Virgin Active at 07:30.
 
RUN:  Track will be at the Green Point Cricket Club on Tuesday morning at 06:00 and again in the evening at 18:00.  On Thursday we will do a Trail run from Green Point Cricket Club at 18:00.  Please bring a headlamp for this session.
 
On Sunday we will do a trail run from the Point Virgin Active to the top of Lion’s Head and back.  We will start at 07:30 and follow our mid-week route on the trails above Green and Sea Point to the Lion’s rump.  From there we will head up to the top.  We will return via the trails past the Noon Gun.

The Spur Cape Winter Trail Series kicks off on Sunday on the Paul Gluver Estate with a choice of 16 Km or 9.1 Km routes.  There is also the GLB 46 Km XXL Ultra, which will take runners through the Groenlandberg mountain range.  Thanks to complimentary entries from Wildrunner, we will be sending four development runners to contest the Short Course series!  Good luck to Dawood Goeiman, Reginald Poss, Daniel Arendse and Bruzano Britz for the series!   Number collection will take place on Wednesday, 15 July from 12:00 to 18:00 at the Protea Hotel, Fire & Ice! On Saturday is the Fairbridge Mall 15 K road Run in Brackenfell.  On Sunday there is a 1900m open water swim at Clifton 4th, arranged by the 1SOMS organisers. Registration for the swim starts at 08:30.
 
Good luck to all the Mountain Bikers doing the SA Mountain Bike Championships in Stellenbosch this weekend.
 
Embark Mauritius Tour
Good luck to the Embark contingent of Mauritius Marathon and Half Marathon runners who will be leaving for the Island this week to do the event followed by a week of recovery in luxury!
