SA Sprint & Standard TRI Champs

20 – 21 March 2021
Maselspoort, Bloemfontein

What a great weekend at the SA National Triathlon Championships in Bloemfontein on 20 – 21 March.  Well organised by the Free State Triathlon Association (FST) and great racing by all provinces.  Team CTTA walked away with 21 medals including 8 National Champions.  Well done #Prrrooooovvvviiiinnnceee!

PTO Elites Race

Annah Watkinson (ATC) became the SA Champ when she crossed the line as the first SA lady in the Elites race.  She was 3rd overall, behind Emma Pallant (UK) and Shanae Williams (KZN, u/23) in the open elite’s race, sponsored by the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO).

Nicholas Quenet (ATC) got silver in the men’s race, followed by Matthew Trautman (ATC) with bronze and Bradley Weiss (ATC) in 4th.    These gentleman were 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively in the PTO Elites race, which was won by Henri Schoeman (KZN) with Jamie Riddle (NMB, u/23) in second.

Standard Distance Championships

Under the Senior Age Groupers in the Standard Distance Championships, Julia Fleming (ATC, F20-24) and Hanré Van Der Vyver (ATC, F25-29) are our SA Champs!  Lesyl Potgieter (ATC) got Bronze in the F45-49 Age Group.  Carol Watton (ATC) got Silver in the F50-54 AG followed by Jeannine Ruffels (ATC) in 3rd.

ParaTriathlete Sprint Championships

Gavin Kilpatrick (Deltasport MSC) with his Guide (CGT) won the ParaTriathlete’s Sprint Race and is the SA Champ in the PTVI 3 Category.

Senior Age Groupers Sprint Championships

In the Age Groupers Sprint Championships, Leanda Dada Du Bruyn (ATC, F25-29), Karen Nortje (MSM, F50-54) and Cobie Steinberg (ATC, F70-74) are the national champs! 

Annemarie Kropman (CMC, F45-49) got Silver and the following Triathletes celebrated with Bronze:  Monique Brynard          (ATC, F20-24), Martin Grobbelaar (CMC, M30-34), STeve Attwell (ATC, M40-44), Herman De Vries (ATC, M45-49), Paul Ingpen (ATC, M50-54) and Carl May (ATC, M60-64).

Youth Super Sprint Championships

Our youngest champion is Nadia Van Wyk (ATC) who won the F12-13 Age Group in the Youths Super Sprint race.

Standard Distance Championships (45+) Sunday Morning
Short Bike Course
Unfortunately, the unplanned, short, bike course for the Age Groupers who raced on Sunday morning, marred the event for the athletes who, either lost out on a podium position, or achieved a podium position which they cannot be entirely satisfied with.  It is always the athletes who lose out in a situation like this while none of them were at fault.
The athletes who did 4 laps cannot be penalised because they followed the documented route.
The athletes who doubted their lap count because of the huge margin (10%) in the shortened route, cannot be faulted for doing an extra lap as the documentation stated that the route was close to 40 KM and there was no attempt to notify athletes during the race that the course was shortened.
Whilst nothing we can be done about the outcome and medals awarded, athletes who did an extra lap or distance to make up 40 Kms can request that their result be re-evaluated for purposes of selection into the team to represent SA at the World Championships.
