The perfect storm! The smaller teams, reverse starting order, strong winds and extreme heat made it very difficult for the lower seeded teams and, unfortunately, meant that a lot of teams didn’t make the cut-off at the lunch stop in Ashton. It was a huge disappointment for riders who struggled through a strong headwind and heat to get to Ashton, only to be told that they could not continue. Below are some stats showing team finish rates in relation to start times. All teams who started before 06:00, finished the race whereas only 33% of teams who started after 07:00 finished.

Still, it was good that the event could go ahead, and riders could spend the weekend away in Swellendam. Huge congratulations to the teams and members who did make it!
