Cycling history set to be made in South Africa with the Breedenet Cape Duo Challenge
When the world’s first multi discipline multi-stage cycling event takes place in the Western Cape in October it will put to rest an age-old question of who is better on the bike: roadies or mountain bikers?
With South Africa’s fast-growing cycling industry ripe for innovation, the Cape Duo Challenge has a refreshing approach: a four-day, multi-discipline cycling event competing both on and off-road, swapping bicycles for different stages in picturesque locations including Slanghoek Valley, Welvanpas and Bainskloof Pass. Entries are limited to 300 pairs of amateur cyclists.
Founder Peter Diesel-Reynolds and Race Director Ernst Viljoen, both passionate cyclists who know the thrill of a good race, believe cyclists are looking for that X-factor; something exciting, fun and different. “Races are either road or mountain bike, although many cyclists compete across both disciplines. There has never been a multi day stage race which combines both on- and off-road cycling, with accumulative points. Additionally, all cyclists are aware of the playful rivalry that exists between ‘roadies’ and mountain bikers, so the Cape Duo Challenge could provide the opportunity to see who the best all-round cyclist is. This race could settle the rivalry once and for all.”
The beneficiary of the Cape Duo Challenge is Ground Level Projects, which provides less fortunate children in grades one to seven with education and transport. “The project has capacity for at least another 100 children and with the money raised by the Cape Duo Challenge, this will become a reality,” he said. “Entering this one of a kind event will help make a different to South Africa’s future.”
Comments race ambassador Lehane Oosthuizen, “A wonderful innovative concept that takes stage racing to a whole new level. Interesting, challenging and at the heart of it, it gives back to the community. What more can you ask for? I can't wait for the Cape Duo!"
The multi-stage cycling event is sanctioned by the Pedal Power Association and takes place from Thursday, 5 October to Sunday, 8 October 2017 at a cost of R9 950 per team. Enter your team at www.capeduo.com. Closing date for entries is 10 September 2017.
